Part of the process of correcting vision impacted by cataracts is to remove the clouded lens. What is removed, however, also must be replaced if there is a chance that hefty corrective eyeglasses can be avoided. Today, eye surgeons offer a number of intraocular lenses to help patients address their vision needs. Monofocal IOLs are those that correct distance vision only. In order to increase the ability to see clearly at both near and distance, some patients choose a multifocal IOL like the ReSTOR® lens. One of the goals of treatment in our office near Lake Forest, CA is to help patients determine which type of IOL is most appropriate for their needs.

Multifocal lenses like ReSTOR® are designed to correct presbyopia, allowing the cataract patient to not only see more clearly, but to do so with a decreased dependence on bifocals or other corrective eyewear as they perform their normal daily activities.

ReSTOR® works for a variety of individuals

For most healthy people whose vision has been affected by cataracts and presbyopia, the ReSTOR® lens is an appropriate choice. During your consultation at the Orange County Eye Institute, a thorough evaluation is performed to lead us in the precise direction in terms of cataract surgery and lens replacement. In many cases, the ReSTOR® multifocal IOL can be used even if a patient has undergone refractive surgery such as LASIK in the past. As long as the eyes are generally healthy, this type of IOL may be a suitable treatment option.

Dr. George Salib is an experienced eye surgeon who has helped hundreds of individuals experience vision improvement through cataract removal. In his experience, he has learned that each person is different. Fortunately, there are a variety of IOL options to choose from.

In some cases, another option may be more suitable than ReSTOR®:

• The patient who is hypercritical of vision acuity and other factors may have unrealistic expectations and is more likely to be unsatisfied with results of cataract surgery.
• Those whose occupation or hobbies require excellent night vision may not be good candidates for the ReSTOR® lens.
• Patients who do not mind wearing eyeglasses may choose a monofocal lens over a multifocal lens.
• Macular degeneration and other retina conditions may negate the effectiveness of IOL treatment.
