Lens implant treatment customized in our Laguna Hills practice for the greatest benefit

A cataract can get in the way of seeing as clearly as you need to. Usually, cataracts gradually progress, posing no significant risk to eyesight. At some point, however, most people with cataracts decide that removal is a necessary step toward regaining a better quality of life. At The Orange County Eye Institute, we get to know our patient well before choosing a lens implant. We understand some who visit our Laguna Hills office are perfect candidates for a multifocal lens, and an alternative must be found for others.

Above all, the success of a prescribed intra-ocular lens lies in the patient. Specifically, in the tolerance the patient will have for slight imperfections. Multifocal IOLs are indeed marvelous, high-tech solutions for impaired vision. They may not restore vision to its most crisp at all distances and in all circumstances. For this reason, treatment with a multifocal IOL may not be recommended for patients who experienced only mild presbyopia before having a cataract removed, or for those with only mild vision problems such as myopia.

Multifocal IOLs, in particular, may produce some type of mild distortion. What most people experience are vague halos or glare around light in darkness, though night driving is typically not a problem.

The patients who seem to acclimate to multifocal IOL wear the best are those that are easy-going in nature. Patients whose eyes are generally healthy, who want to preserve a higher level of activity may be more motivated to get rid of their dependency on eyeglasses and, therefore, suited to multifocal lenses. This treatment may also be quite beneficial to patients who are nearsighted due to the increased ability to focus on objects close up.

It is important to have realistic expectations of what an IOL can and cannot do. The tradeoff of mild visual distortions like halos for the reduction or elimination of a reliance on eyeglasses or contact lenses must be worth it. This is a personal decision that each patient makes.
