Cataracts are a fairly common vision concern, especially as we grow older. The National Eye Institute reports that approximately half of the population will have a cataract or will have had cataract surgery by the age of 80. Dr. George Salib of the Orange County Eye Institute has helped many Southern California patients renew clear vision with safe, effective cataract surgery. If you live in the Laguna Beach area and notice the signs of cataracts, an examination performed by your experienced eye doctor can pave the way to resolution. Cataract surgery is designed to remove tissue that has become clouded and restore vision with an intraocular lens suited to the patient’s needs. Once removed, an original cataract will not return. There is the possibility, however, that a secondary cataract may develop. This condition is also called posterior capsule opacity. Secondary cataracts after cataract surgery occur only in a very small percentage of cataract patients, about 10 percent. Cataract surgery involves the removal of the affected lens and its replacement with a suitable intraocular lens that enables the patient to see clearly. The natural lens that is removed lies within a natural membranous capsule, which is opened in order to remove the lens. This capsule remains in place, and will also house the replacement lens. Secondary cataracts are those that develop behind the new lens, out of cells that remain from the old lens. The cells that cause posterior capsule opacity cause many of the same problems as a cataract. Just like a primary cataract, a secondary cataract can, in time, impact visual acuity. If vision becomes hazy or blurry, double vision occurs, glare or bright lights are a problem, or it becomes difficult to see at night, your eye surgeon can discuss options for removing the secondary cataract. Treatment for secondary cataracts is a simple laser procedure called a YAG laser capsulotomy. The procedure directs laser energy in short pulses to the lens capsule, making a small hole in the membrane through which light can pass through to the back of the eye. The capsulotomy is a painless procedure that takes only a few minutes to complete in our Orange County office. The eye heals very quickly, and vision is immediately restored. At the Orange County Eye Institute, you can address cataracts and other vision concerns with an experienced, caring team. Contact us for your consultation with Dr. George Salib.
