Cataract removal surgeries in Laguna Hills improved with laser technology

A cataract is not a problem that causes a great deal of immediate concern. Most people are able to live with cataracts for some time, possibly many years. At some point, however, it is likely that a cataract or cataracts will cause clouding so significant that everyday activities become difficult. Experienced Orange County ophthalmologist, Dr. George Salib, has helped thousands of patients reclaim their vision and their quality of life through laser cataract surgery. Through the decades, cataract removal surgeries have continued to evolve until, now, many of our Laguna Hills patients request laser assisted systems for improved surgical outcomes.

Manual cataract removal

Cataract removal is one of the safest, most predictable procedures performed in the ophthalmologic facility. The manual removal of cataracts involves incisions made with a metal or diamond-tipped blade. Incisions are made in the area where the cornea meets the sclera, the white part of the eye. Due to location of incisions, a great deal of precision in the width and depth achieved is needed to initiate the removal of the clouded lens. With precision comes an easier healing process.

Another aspect of cataract surgery in which precision is paramount is the release of the lens from its capsule. This “sac” needs to remain intact in order to hold the replacement lens (intraocular lens).

Laser-assisted cataract removal

While an experienced cataract surgeon is familiar with the technique required to remove cataracts successfully, the inclusion of laser technology in the cataract removal process is preferred by many patients and physicians. Laser-assisted cataract removal includes the use of 3D tomography capable of accurately “mapping” the eye. From detailed representation of the parts of the eye, incisions can be made with the highest degree of precision possible, achieving the exact depth and width desired.

Another way that laser technology improves the cataract removal process is through the application of heat, which causes the cataract to become softer and more pliable. A softer cataract can be more easily dissected through a smaller incision.
